I have been lucky enough to be chosen as one of the artists for the upcoming Democratic National Convention ! The DNC will be here in Philly from July 25-28. The Donkeys are life-size fiberglass casts of the animals, which will arrive at our studio painted grey. There are about 30 artists, found by ArtJawn, who will be painting the donkeys. Our concept sketches were due recently, and I thought I would share them with my friends, many of whom are democrats and also love art. I am SO happy with the random states I was assigned: New York and Montana!! :) The project will be installed around Philadelphia by July 1, and there will be an App where you can look for the donkeys around the city "scavenger hunt" style:
Montana Side 1: I incorporated the large bear head, a mountain range in beautiful blues and purples, and a skier on the rear haunch of the donkey. The head of the donkey is a night sky, milky way galaxy, different colors. On the legs of the donkey there are ski tracks underneath the skier, the other leg is grass under the bear's paw.
Here's a new design I completed today. I started to realize my old cards are pretty dated looking (and almost out, which is a good thing!) So, I created this new design. I used inspiration from the paintings I have been doing lately at live painting events. The two paintings here were completed last night at a PHIT Comedy event called "Untitled." The show meshes improv comedy and visual arts. There are artists paintings or drawing on stage while improvisers create scenes based on the artists' previous work. Then the artists create pieces that are inspired by the scenes. It's very cyclical. And cynical. The sets of 2 paintings were completed start to finish in just under 40 minutes. Yesterday they had a lovely gallery showing afterwards and I sold the farting cardinal and the "Hell is Other People" paintings. Horray!
Recently I saw 2 (countem' - two!) shows on the same evening at PHIT, which means I should get an award or something. Actually my lovely boyfriend should get an award for volunteering to go grab me more cider between the shows (he doesn't drink...and I was wearing heels. Isn't he a gentleman!?) Anyway, I was happy to be drawing some of these folks for the second or third time. Some sketches came out good, some didn't, as always, but that's why it's called practice. ' All the sketches were completed quite quickly, most under 5 minutes, with a ballpoint pen. The exception to this would be the drawing of the Mean Wendy Band, which was about 10-15 minutes I believe. There might be three shows in here, I'm not really sure.

For those of you who may have missed it, I did a spot illustration for a talented and creative writer, musician, and colleague of mine: Daniel DiFranco. He wrote an immersive short story titled The Moon is a Wasteland, about a boy unlucky in love. He asked me to do the illustration, which I have colloquially dubbed "Loopin' Moons." It's a quick and thoughtful read, and I recommend you take the time to enjoy it.
On a personal note, this piece is an important stepping stone for me, as it was done almost entirely digitally. I am forcing myself to use my tablet more and more so that I have more weapons in my arsenal. I am pleased with the illustration and am still convinced I'm going through a "Blue Period" of my own. I am looking forward to illustrating more editorial and short-form styles, and hope to get more jobs like this in the future.
As I have been trying to brush up on my new tablet, this piece is the MOST digital piece I have done to date, although it is not 100%. The moon and rope were sketched traditionally and the shading was utilized in this illustration. Still, I think this piece is an important step into completely understanding my new tools for illustration. <3
For the past few weekends I had been working on a food truck for Lunchbox Philly. Lots of people came up to talk to me about the truck wanting to know about it. The food truck serves different variations of gourmet peanut butter and jelly! mmmm! The truck will be in West Philly and North Philly, as far as I know. Flannelpalooza Chuckoachella is "This faux festival will include a variety of Philadelphia based musical acts that cover the spectrum of performance art, satire, parody, and comedy."
Designed the logo which will be used to promote the event, which will be held in Philadelphia! We were looking for a 90s feel, since that's usually what acts in the festival will parody. I am proud of this one, I enjoy its look...can't wait to get a T shirt either :-p
Last night I went to 2 shows at PHIT, which is an improv theater here in Philly. The first show was called "Theme Show Presents: Rainy Days," and it was a variety show featuring a lot of sketches and short stand up sets. I had no idea how long each sketch or stand up segment was going to be so I had a lot of abandoned drawings. The second was "Guilty Pleasures" which is a show thats been running for quite some time. The easter bunny made an appearance in both shows. Check out my sketchbook from the night below! The shows were great :)
La Va is a cute little coffee house at the corner of 21st and South Streets in Philadelphia. I have been working with the lovely owner Liron on revamping her chalkboard menus and beautiful antique mirror that is hung above their extensive coffee bar. Here are some concept sketches I have laid out in photoshop. The chalkboard is quite large, about 6x4 FEET! The mirror is about 4x2 feet. This is going to be no small job! I believe my best plan of action is printing out the sketches, drawing a grid, and going from there. If you have done large chalk jobs before please tell me your methods! This is my first chalk job of this size.

In order to create the above concept sketches in photoshop, I first used the wonderful website and resource dafont.com to download various fonts. They have some really nice script ones for fair use. Of course I am going to be drawing all of the fonts so they are just references for me to look at, and then ultimately do the job by hand. After creating a text-based image in InDesign I exported the file over to Photoshop, deleted the white background, inverted the colors (because these boards are going to be done in all white chalk markers,) and then layered them over an appropriate background.
